After completing the High School Education, he successfully got admission in Oxford University from where acquired Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Marketing within the tenure of eight years (after Bachelorââ¬â¢s, two years of experience is mandatory to get enrolled in MBA program). The first job that he obtained was a Customer Representative in a local company where he worked for two years. While he was learning the communication and marketing skills during his work, his senior guided him about the way of getting access to the top ranked organisations. The career path comprised of acquiring MBA degree in marketing and then starting the career in a Multinational Corporation as a Market Researcher. After working at that position for three years, he successfully obtained the position of Assistant Marketing Manager in the firm in which he is currently employed. Within one year of his employment, he was promoted to the Marketing Manager position; after two years, he attained the title of Product Manager and finally, after three years of rendering services at this position, he was moved to Brand Portfolio Manager designation. Since the career development is an important aspect of everyoneââ¬â¢s life, many experts have tried to explain the concept by undertaking various studies and experiments. Nowadays, many people love movies and going to the cinema for movie, especially the youngest generation. Cinema are attracted to people and they will be going to the cinema watching movie every week or twice a week for relaxing after day of work or study and this already become as a trend. Cinema is a nice place for entertainment, relax, enjoyable and fun for teenagers, forms a part of our leisure time because of today life has grown complex, full of worries and anxieties. Some of their life cannot without movie. Movie will teaching a lot for us that about life in the world. We are not only can learn and make our lives better and also learn reality in life from the movies. Movies also keep updated us and know the new information, famous and popular things, place or people around the world. A research shows (Levy, n.d) the vast majority (79 perecnt) of those questioned said, Going to the movies is a good escape from everyday life. A fil m can change people life become better or worse. There have 9 types of movies are shown in cinema such as horror movies, romantic movies, drama movies, suspense movies, action movies, violence movies, comedy movies and documentary movies. Despite the fact that, watching a movie not only can affects on moral values and cultures on people who are college students, scholar and childrens and also individual behavior. It can be influence in a numerous ways. The effects of movies are various, including weighing on elements of sex and race. Some of the peoples will influence their thinking, action and attitudes changes on some level by movies but movie has good influence for youth also. In fact, movie has beneficial and harmful effect of media on youth. According to appendix A, the questionnaire and survey shows 21 out of 30 are said that teenagers like to go cinema, others are neutral and disagree. In the other hand, 13 out of 30 are said that movie will influence the behavior and attitude of teenagers in general. Many of parents will control their children going to the cinema for movie or watching film in the house. The reasons of their parents control them because they worry their child influence bad attitude and moral influence from movie like smoking and fashionable such as hairstyle and wearing. Cinema would be easily influence teenagers attitude and thinking, they will change their mind. They would change their habits and try to imitate their favorite stars hairstyle, wearing and attitude. For example, some of the children they would learn smoking from the movie. Violence movie will influence teenagers whose mine are childish. They will try to imitate like ga ngster and doing bad things. Example damage people house and cars fight with others people, bullying and vandalism. Romantic movies also will affect youth thinking and behavior. After youth watch a romantic movie, the percentage of early married will increase because the end of the movie is the best. Many people agree watching movie on weekends but teenagers, scholar, student and college student who spend too much on watching movie will be addicted and tend have sedentary lifestyle. They will not only influence their cultural, lifestyle and homework and also physical influence. Physical influence means influence their health. They always stay at cinema or home watch movie and lack of doing exercise at outside to absorb a fresh air so that they will get fat and illness. Besides that, from the survey are said that 14 out of 30 said that the movie tickets are very expensive. It would be increase the expense of the parent. The survey are said that 16 out of 30 said that are disagree movies that are played more than 1 hour are wasting time. I am agreeing also because sometimes watching movie is not wasting time. That is giving us relax after working or study. Watching movie will keep updating us with the world what had happening and trend around the world. The questionnaire shows that movie will not affect relationship like family relationship, friends and couple relationship. I am agreeing movie is a best way to improve relationship when they are sitting together watch a film because they can share and communicate about their feeling, opinion or thinking from the movie, especially family relationship. Parents should spend one or two hours for movie to accompany their children. From that, parents can know well what their children thinking and doing. Furthermore, the questionnaire survey shows that 10 out of 30 are agree movies will help us to be more creative. 12 out of 30 are disagreeing with the movies help us to be more creative and 8 out of 30 are neutral. Movie is a mind-killer. It dulls you. In my opinion, watching movie will disturb youth mind while there are doing homework or finding a creative inspiration because most of the youth, even though is adult, they also will concentrate on movie more than their tasks. The survey of questionnaire shows that 13 out of 30 are agreeing movies will affect performance in education. Parents must be full of supervision because movies will affect youth examination result, affecting college students, scholar and children reading habit. However, movies can be a powerful teacher. Sometimes youth will learn harmony, cooperation, kindness though the movie. A recent article (Anon., 2003) states that high school programming promoting media have been shown too beneficial, they give students mo re understanding when learning. And also movies will help youth to improve their language. Conclusion and Recommendation: In the conclusion, my opinion, movie is harmful more than beneficial for youth. Movie has big power to affect youth thinking, attitude, behavior, habits, lifestyle, cultural and hobby, even though is an adult. In the cinema, violence movies shouldnt band but less than 18 years old should prohibition watching violence movie in cinema so that can reduce youth imitate to be a gangster, doing a vandalism and the world may be reduce scum because under 18 years old their mind are still young, they cant analysis what are right and wrong. For me, I am not agreeing every weekend going for movie that is not necessarily because tickets of the movies are expensive. It will increase parents burden. Sometimes parents should spend some times to accompany their children watching movie and control them do not spend too much time for movie although they are Study College or University because movie will influence their examination result. Watching movie is a great ways to improve relationship with fam ily and friends, not only couple. It can know well each others for the movie. Who are interested in accountant and having math foundation and higher math in English is useful of seeking accountancy job. In a business view, a international companies or corporation company will first consider and hire a employees are best, can speak well and write well in English and also dual language because they will easily communicate and doing a report with their clients those are in other foreign countries which they are do not know speaking in Malay or Chinese. However how excellent in the result is, if do not know and speak in English, that will always miss the job opportunities. Many of documents, report, projects, contracts, memo and emails are written in English, peoples are known in English it will easy to handle and understand the project or the job. The language of English has become internationally across the world especially daily communicating, business, science, technology, banking, medicine, computing, tourism and engineering. Speak well in English language in addition to native language can be beneficial if people are seeking job with international companies. They would not be communicating problem in workplace when they working. English language has become a basic requirement for students and job seekers will increasingly in globalised world. If can speak fluent in English will get the great job easy. 5. In addition, speak well in English like can much closer and more connected with the world. If when we going for travel at foreign country like United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia and so on so that we can get the travel become easier communicate with local people that may not speak any other language and it will be more enjoyable. Most of the banks, airports, and restaurant and hotel employees will communicate in English with customers and using English sign to guide you, especially 5 stars and above or high class restaurant. And the signboard of foreign country will write in English. Faulkners Human Spirit Essay -- Authors
William Faulkner accepted his Nobel Peace Prize in December 1950. During his acceptance speech, Faulkner proclaimed that the award was made not to him as a man, but to his lifeââ¬â¢s work, which was created, ââ¬Å"out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before.â⬠(PF ) He felt that the modern writer had lost connection to his spirit and that he must reconnect with the universal truths of the heartââ¬âââ¬Å"love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.â⬠(PF ) Through his characters voice and exposure of their spirit, Faulkner solidified manââ¬â¢s immortality by ââ¬Å"lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.â⬠(PF ) Although some critics have characterized his work as violet, dealing with immoral themes and the miseries and brutality of life; it can be argued that even his most sad and dep raved characters express positive virtues and personal strengths, even if by a negative example. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the portrayal and manifestation of the human spirit in a select few of William Faulknerââ¬â¢s literary characters, showing that they possess both human strength and flaws. So what is the human spirit and why is it significant? It is a somewhat indefinable concept. Trapped – Creative Writing
The rampant stench of death, yes, that's it, that's my earliest memory. The pungent odour of decay numbing my already haggard senses. The room couldn't of been too big. I remember banging my head on a wall, and stubbing a toe on the opposite one. I remember struggling to my feet, and stumbling into the light. I wandered for ages along the side of a road, watching pairs of lights approach and skittishly dash away. Then there is blackness. As strange as that event was, the strangest thing that day was me. I felt. My body felt wrong. Those hands were not my hands; those legs were not my legs. My whole body ached, it felt like when you've sat in the same position for a too long, but amplified a hundred times. I was woken up by a blinding light in my face. The aroma of sterilisation exposed at once I was in a hospital. Quickly, I tried to sit up, but a sharp stabbing in my back forced me back to the taut linen. Against my will, I yelped at the pain, and a nurse was quick to my bedside with a calming hand on my brow. ââ¬Å"I knew you would be awake soonâ⬠. I attempted to speak, but I could force the words from behind those hideous foreign lips. She walked to the foot of the bed and looked at a chart. She quickly glanced back at a monitor, fixed to the wall. Her young forehead furrowed, and she hailed an older doctor. She returned to me, her senior in tow. ââ¬Å"Hello there,â⬠he barked, in a voice that wanted to be far friendlier than it was, ââ¬Å"Can you hear me? â⬠Again, words formed in my throat, I struggled with them, trying to remember how to get the sentence out. I made do with a laboured nod. The doctor looked at the nurse and muttered a blur of words. The nurse thought for a moment then replied in her wondrously soft tone. The doctor nodded sharply. Without warning he shone a vicious torch in my eyes. He swung the instrument left and right, his look of concern turned to one of pity. He looked again at the nurse, who smiled a stunningly beautiful smile at him, although I knew it was one of apprehension. I feel back into the sleep. April 23rd ââ¬â St. George's day, the calendar on the wall proudly proclaimed. Quickly, I tried to sit up; I slid back, resting my spine against the padded lilac headboard. The room was alien to me; a glass-fronted cabinet in the corner displayed a few dusty relics, the remnants of an over loved life. The door slowly opened, a figure apprehensively poked a frail head through the opening. ââ¬Å"Lie down Boy, you need your strengthâ⬠ââ¬Å"W-Whoâ⬠¦ â⬠I strained out. ââ¬Å"Don't worry my boy, you're safe nowâ⬠Her voice was soft, but not like the nurse's, it was soft with experience. ââ¬Å"W-Whoâ⬠I managed again. She answered by ambling to the bed, and placing a coarse hand on my brow. With that she left the room, closing the door harshly behind her. I dragged the floral covers off, onto the wooden floor, and managed to roll with it. I struggled to my feet, which felt numb on the hard, cold floor. I stumbled to the close, mauve wall, and followed it to the door. I reached for the black metal handle, and it took all my strength to jerk it down far enough for the door to swing open. The room I entered was much bigger than the bedroom. Full of tasteless furnishings, the lavender tinted room had a disgusting flowery scent. I could see the door at the other end, next to the large bay windows. If I could run I would easily make it. But as it was, I knew it was unlikely I would reach the exit in time. I braced myself, took a deep breath, and stumbled as fast as I could towards the light. Michael! â⬠It did not even register that the frail old lady was referring to me; I knew it was directed at me, but Michael isn't my name, it seemed foreign to me. I kept heading for the door. Using whatever I could find to support me, the door was getting closer. I awkwardly stretched out my arm, and grabbed the brass knob. I shook the knob in everyway I could, until eventually it clicked open. It swung open and I worked down the cobbled path. As I started across the pavement I realised I was not only wearing no shoes, but was clad in ill-fitting, pale blue pyjamas. I continued staggering quickly down the road, I glanced over my shoulder, she wasn't following me. The terrace of houses gave way to a wide, green park. I lurched towards the grass and fell down to the warm earth. My eyes again fell closed, but this time I was stayed conscious. I dreamt of past times, faded images of long ago, of woeful agony, and beacons of hope. The sound of laughter woke me up. My obvious suffering had created a small audience, consisting of three schoolboys and a scraggy dog. One of the boys held a stick close to my face. I built up my strength, and in one swift action, I opened my eyes and thrust up my hand. The three boys and the dog went running away in the direction I had come from. Again, I struggled to my feet. I took a few minutes to get my bearings. ââ¬Å"Michael! â⬠I heard from afar. The lady had finally decided to search for me. Quickly, the idea came into my head, the bush was just there, and here search was not going to be a thorough one. I clambered into the leafy bush, and curled up into a ball. I waited, and eventually she came ââ¬Å"Where are you Michael? â⬠she demanded. She wandered past the bush, totally unaware that her quarry was so close. On she continued, with every glance I laid upon her, the more repulsive she appeared to me. From her yellow teeth, to her speckled, bowed legs, she was the picture of imperfection. When I was sure she was far enough from me, I left the bush, and returned up the pavement to the house I had so recently vacated. I knew it would hold some clues, I just need time to find them. The room was not as I remembered it. One of the two beige sofas was overturned, as if the dim-witted lady had looked for me under there. A set of shelves stood in the corner; I scanned every shelf, and eventually found what I was looking for. A wonderfully carved wooden box. For some reason I took the box back into the room that was made mine, I suppose I felt safer there. I sat on the bed and spread the contents of the box over the hideous bed spread. I rummaged through the collection of documents, many of which were faded by time, and looked at each of them, looking for clues. My attention was drawn to a very faded pink A4 sheet, at the top the crest of the county of Hampshire, and the words ââ¬ËCertificate of Birth'. The certificate was filled in with a neat, yet decorative scrawl. The certificate was made out on the 17th of July 1937, for one ââ¬Å"Margaret Bakerâ⬠. That must have been the women who's house I was currently trespassing. I looked around for another one, one that could explain a little about ââ¬ËMichael'. But there were no more. I hunted on, giving each one a fleeting glance, until I discovered a small, leather bound book. I opened it and quickly flicked through the dog-eared pages. As my eyes met with the address, my heart went cold. The book seemed to be laughing at me, mocking my discomfort, taking pleasure in my obvious pain. I ripped the yellowed page out, and threw the address book to the cold floor. For the second time I left the house, this time I broke into a run as I left the deep odour of cheap air freshener behind. I ran to the end of the road, gasping deep breaths of the still noon air. I took a left turn into Tanam Street, and glanced again at the folded leaf of paper, still in my hand. I scanned the houses, as I laid eyes on it, I knew it was the right one. I hobbled towards the black abode, the white of the original faux Tudor dicor trying to break through the thick back paint. Cautiously I opened the black door. The house was empty, judging by the dust, it had been for some days. I wondered round the house, there really wasn't much to see in it. Each room was sparsely filled with simple furnishings, and uninspired pieces of angst art. I opened one door that led into an equally simple bedroom. The only other door stood on the opposite wall. It creaked open slowly. I carefully walked down the wooden stairs into the darkness beyond. The cold air of the cellar penetrated my bones. I rubbed my hand along the breezeblocked wall searching for a light switch. As I got to the bottom my fingers found a cold, steel knob. I turned it the way it wanted to go. With a fizz, the room filled with the glow of the flickering bar light. The room was empty, apart from a desk in the far corner. There was nothing on the desk, and both of the drawers were locked. My eyes drifted up to the corkboard attached gruffly to the wall. Various black and white photos were pinned to it, and I pulled one off at random. My body froze. There I was. Lying on a steel bed, there I was. The familiar muscles, the face, the hair, the eyes, all mine. I let the picture fall to the ground. My eyes drifted from one picture to another, each one reminding of myself when I was free. The nostalgia turned to anger as I thought of who could of done this, and why they would want to. My darting eyes ended up on one picture. Whoever had done this to me, whoever had usurped my body, had set up a sign. It said simply ââ¬Å"Marcus Thompson ââ¬â 24 Payet Drive. â⬠That was it. That was me. Memories came back to me in a flood, knocking me to the hard concrete floor. I got up of the floor and drifted back up the splintering wooden stairs, and wavered out of the house. Again I was feeling light headed, and my joints were again aching. I closed my eyes, yet I knew exactly where I was going, the memories of my lifelong home were ripe in my mind. I closed my eyes and continued walking. The memories in my mind guiding me back to myself. I can't remember how far I walked but when I opened my eyes it was dark. I found myself sitting on a bench next to a signpost. ââ¬Å"Payet Driveâ⬠it announced proudly. I stood, still dazed, and began to make my way down the short road. Number 24 stood just I remembered it, another of the phoney Tudor houses that dominated the area. I made the quick walk to the font door; I tried the handle, to find it locked. I stood blankly for a moment. Without thinking I bent over and picked up a large rock next to the doormat. Underneath was a blue key. I slid it into its hole and slowly turned it, slowly as to make as little noise as possible when the bolt clicked open. I slid the door ajar, and entered quietly through the gap. There was no sign of anyone. Methodically, I searched the rooms of the house, each one bringing back another memory. I ended up upstairs, at the end of the landing. This was the last door; this was the door to my bedroom. As with all the rooms I searched, I carefully opened the panelled oak door, and entered, this time with more apprehension then before. For the third time that day, my body froze. Seeing yourself in third person is an unsettling experience. I lay silently asleep with my back against the blue wall, my feet hanging off the side of the cramped bed. Tears filled my eyes I gazed at the body on the, unaware that it, that I was being watched. That's when it hit me. It was him. All along I had assumed there was a third party involved, an insane individual, bent on swapping round the minds of two men. But, no man who has been through what I have could have slept so soundly. He did this too me. To us. The anger slowly built up inside me. The agitation and fear of the past days gave way to this new sensation of rage. I couldn't control the body; the prison in which I was enclosed seemed to move on its own accord, across the landing, down the stairs. I found myself in the kitchen. The knife lay, glinting, smiling softly at me. My hands slowly wrapped round the warm black handle. I struggled to lift the knife with my weakened arms. I crept silently with trepidation up the carpeted stairway. I nudged the door open. There I was, mouth hanging open, peaceful in ignorance. I rubbed my hand down my face, reminiscing of past times. I stepped back to look at myself for the final time. My body lay perfectly still, no longer breathing. The thin gash across the neck marked the end. I lifted up the cover, clambered onto the bed. My eyes closed, and I fell into a long peaceful sleep.

THE TRANSFER OF PROPERTY ACT, 1882 PERSONS COMPETENT TO TRANSFER (Section-7 ) Submitted by: Ananya mohapatra BBA-LLB (A) 5th Semester 1082015 PERSONS COMPETENT TO TRANSFER (Section-7) Every person competent to contract and entitled to transferable property, or authorized to dispose of transferable property not his own, is competent to transfer such property either wholly or in part, and either absolutely or conditionally, in the circumstances, to the extent and in the manner, allowed and prescribed by any law for the time being in force.Who is a Transferor? Every person who is competent to contract as per the Indian Contract Act is also competent to transfer a property provided that he is authorized to transfer it as per the law. The term ââ¬Å"authorizedâ⬠needs to emphasize. If transferor is not owner of the property he purports to transfer he must show that he is otherwise authorizes by law to transfer the property. Who is a Transferee? As far as a transferee is concerned th ere is no such requirement that he must be competent to contract.So, a minor, lunatic- all they can be transferees. However, a few limitations are there. First in the lease of lease both transferor and transferee have to be major or otherwise competent to make contract. Second, if a gift is made to a minor, it has to be accepted by its guardian. Apart from these, there may also be some special provisions which attach some (dis)qualification to a person wanted to be a transferee. For Eg: S. 136 of the T. P. Act provides that officers of the court including judges and advocates cannot be assignee of actionable claims.COMPETENT TO TRANSFER Under S 6(h) (3), any person is competent to be a transferee, unless legally disqualified. This section deals with the competency of a transferor. The transferor must be- a) competent to contract; and b) have title to the property or authority to transfer it if not his own. COMPETENT TO CONTRACT This is the same condition as is enacted by S 7 of the Indian Trusts Act, 1882 for the creation of a trust. S 11 of the Indian Contract Act 1872 defines the capacity to contract.The power to transfer must depend upon the power to contract, for without an antecedent contract to give and take; there can be no transfer at all. MINOR AS A TRANSFEROR The transferor must have attained the age of majority according to the law to which he is subject. The Privy Council held that a contract by a minor is void and so therefore the transfer by a minor is also void. Although a minor is not competent to transfer, yet a transfer to a minor is valid. LUNATIC AS A TRANSFEROR Under S. 2 of the Indian Contract Act 1872, a person is of sound mind for the purpose of making a contract if he is capable of understanding and of forming a rational judgment as to its effect upon his interests. A contract made by a lunatic is void under the Indian Contract Act 1872, and so also a transfer by him of his property is void. Disqualified to contract A statutory disqual ification to contract imports, as in the case of a minor, inability to transfer. Such a disqualification ensues when the ownerââ¬â¢s property is under the management of the Court of Wards, or of an officer appointed under Encumbered Estates Act.A judgment debtor whose property is being sold in execution by the collector is also incompetent to alienate. Oral Transfer: Formalities of a Transfer Section 9 of the TP Act states that in every case where writing is not required a transfer can be made orally. The meaning is that if writing is not required by Law- property can be transferred by delivery of possession of the property. He wants himself to be the leader of the group instead of Ralph. Along the book Jackââ¬â¢s going slightly mad. c. Who is the speaker? The story is told by an omniscient author, who can enter the minds of his characters but who also remains at a distance. d. What do you know about the author? William Golding was born in St. Columb Minor, Cornwall in 1911. In the year 1939 he got married. He got two children. In 1940 he served in the navy. After that he became a schoolmaster on Bischop Wordsworthsââ¬â¢ School in Salisb. He enjoys sailing and the classical Greek language, which he taught himself. He writes books and he also writes poetry. e. Does the story fit in the time period in which it was written? Yes, this century was a time of war. Golding even took part of the 2nd World War. It is no wonder that Golding started questioning humanity. 4.) Thematical a. What is the theme? It is a theme novel, the central theme is Evil. When the boys are on the island, their civilised behaviour starts to fade away and some of them become evil. b. What is the main problem in the story? Jack is the main problem. Ralph wants to keep the fire burning so they can be rescued and Jack only wants to hunt. Eventually Jack becomes a savage and becomes the leader of his own tribe. They even kill two boys of the group and are trying to kill Ralph. c. Is this problem solved? Yes, at the end of the book the boys are saved by a navy cruiser. So they are all saved from Jack. d. How would you deal with it? Itââ¬â¢s a really difficult situation because Jack would be willing to kill you. But I guess I would flee to another part of the island and start to live there. Eventually other children would come too because of Jackââ¬â¢s dictatorship. e. What is the link between the title and the theme? I donââ¬â¢t see a link between the both of them. The title is revering to the pigââ¬â¢s head, which is poked on a spear to attract the beast. Because the head is covered with flies the boys call it The Lord of the Flies. 5.) Select a passage from the text which appeals to you. Copy it and elaborate on your choice. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m scared of him,â⬠said Piggy, ââ¬Å"and thatââ¬â¢s why I know him. If youââ¬â¢re scared of someone you hate him but you canââ¬â¢t stop thinking about him. You kid yourself heââ¬â¢s all right really, anââ¬â¢ then when you see him again; itââ¬â¢s like asthma anââ¬â¢ you canââ¬â¢t breathe.â⬠I think the Piggyââ¬â¢s fear of Jack is expressed very well here. When I read it I feel sorry for him because Jack bullies him all the time. Especially the part where he mentions his asthma, I believe for Piggy being near Jack is like having an asthma attack but not having your medicine. 6.) Opinion a. What is your opinion of the book? Golding has really made a marvellous book. The behaviour and habits of the children in the book is so well written. I wasnââ¬â¢t surprised when I heard that Golding examined the habits of children. He really gave an adult view of what might happen in real life if children were left alone on a tropical island. The tension in the book is built up well, the author really keeps you reading. b. Would you recommend it to others? Why (not)? I would recommend it to others because this book is not only about a group of boys left on an uninhabited island. It has a deeper meaning to it thatââ¬â¢s really worth it. 7.) Write your own summary A group of boys are on a stuck on an uninhabited island when their plane crashes. On the beach Ralph found Piggy, one of the boys, who has found a conch shell. With this conch Ralph calls the other boys. The group voted for Ralph to be their leader. Ralph decides that Jack and his choir are the ones who hunt for food and keep the fire going so that they can be rescued. Ralph also makes a rule about the conch; the boy who has the conch may speak. When Jack and his little group werenââ¬â¢t keeping the fire going a ship appeared on the horizon. They could have been saved if jack didnââ¬â¢t let the fire go out. Ralph is very angry with Jack. Jack breaks Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses in his madness. From this point Jack and his little group are starting to separate themselves from the rest. The rumour about a beast was believed to be true when Eric and Sam saw something at the top of the mountain. Ralph and Jack go up the mountain to kill the beast, which was actually a dead airman who is shot down, but fled because they were scared. Many of the boys are still frightened. Jack starts his own tribe because he couldnââ¬â¢t live with Ralphââ¬â¢s rules. Jackââ¬â¢s tribe hunt a pig. They put the head of the pig on a stick to please the beast. Simon, who doesnââ¬â¢t feel at home with other people around often sneaks out into the forest so he can be alone. He pretends the pigââ¬â¢s head, the lord of the flies, can speak. The lord of the flies tells him that nobody can escape from the beast because the beast lives inside everyone. Simon climbs up the mountain and finds out that the beast is just a dead airman. When he goes back to the tribe to tell them the news heââ¬â¢s killed because the tribe thinks heââ¬â¢s the beast. Jack and his tribe steal Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses that night so they can make fire. The next day Piggy, Ralph, Sam and Eric go to Jackââ¬â¢s tribe to reclaim Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses. Suddenly they are having a big fight and piggy is killed by rock. Ralph has to run for his life, and after a long pursuit on which almost the whole island catches fire, he finds a naval man and knows heââ¬Ës saved. The Prehistory and Ratification of the American Constitution Essay To ratify a treaty or agreement is to make it official by signing it or voting for it. For amendments of the federal constitution to take place, it usually requires the support of both the federal government and a given percentage of the constituent governments. Article five of the constitution of the United States of America illustrates how to amend the document. There are two steps involved; proposal and ratification. In proposing an amendment, either congress or the states can propose an amendment of the constitution. (Both houses of congress must propose the amendment with a two-thirds vote. Two-thirds of the state legislatures must call a congress to hold a constitutional convention.) In ratifying an amendment, regardless of how the amendment has been proposed, it must be ratified by the states. (Three-fourths of the state legislatures must approve the amendment proposed by congress or three-fourths of the states must approve the amendment through ratifying conventions.) Ratification of the constitution in 1787 à à à à à à In 1787 and 1788, after the constitutional convention, there was a great debate in the United States of America over the constitution that had been proposed. Federalists were in favor of the constitution and a strong central government as well. These federalists were people like George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. On the opposing side were the anti federalists who were in favor of stronger state legislatures and a weaker central government. The anti-federalists did not want the constitution to be ratified. They were people like Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. Federalists were in support of the ratification process due to the following reasons à à à à à à Federalists also reasoned out that the new government would not be dominated by any group and there were various adequate safeguards to protect individuals and the states. The constitution, therefore, did not need a Bill of Rights since it could create a ââ¬Ëparchment barrier which limited the rights of people instead of protecting them. They considered a Bill of Rights unnecessary because the state governments already had such bills. They wanted a strong federal government which would hold the nation together. The nation was facing several problems, especially constant trade disputes which were at the verge of dividing the nation. A strong federal government was, therefore, necessary. Anti-federalists, on the other hand, did not support the ratification process for the following reasons; They were concerned about the liberties that Americans had won in the revolution. They feared that a strong federal government would destroy these liberties. They were worried that the constitution did not list specific rights for the people. From the above discussion, if I had been alive in 1787, I would have supported the ratification process because of the following reasons; A stronger national government was required to solve persistent problems in America such as lack of a common currency, constant trade disputes between the states and a lack of unity in trade. Features of the constitution would provide adequate power to the national government to address these problems while protecting the rights and freedoms of the people. There were philosophical reasons to oppose the constitution as well. The new government which would be established by the new constitution would create a link between sovereign states. Besides, government did not have power because it was the government, but because the people had granted it power. Federal courts had limited jurisdiction. Many areas were left to the state and local courts. New federal courts were necessary to provide checks and balances on the power of the other two arms of government. Federal courts would thus protect the citizens from government abuse and guarantee their freedom. By separating the basic powers of government into three equal branches, and not giving too much power group, the constitution would provide balance and prevent potential for tyranny. In addition, the anti-federalists main reason for not accepting the ratification process was that the bill of rights had not been included. Archangel Uriel: The Wisdom Of God The Archangel Uriel is one of the four archangels that rule over the four corners of the Earth. The other three are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Uriel is the least mentioned of these four archangels, if he is mentioned at all. According to some traditions, there are seven archangels. But even in these accounts, these four are the most prominent. There are scant references to Uriel in scripture. Jewish scripture does not mention the archangels by name. In Christianity, Uriel appears in the Gnostic version of the Bible where we learn his name means The Light Of God. Uriel is also known as the angel of Wisdom. His realm is in the mental plane where thoughts, ideas, and creativity reside. As The Light of God, the Archangel Uriel shines the light of truth and wisdom where there is darkness, deception, and confusion. Uriel also helps people to control their emotions, guiding them to release anger and overcome anxiety, both of which are obstacles to gaining wisdom. The archangel provides guidance in recognizing and avoiding dangerous situations. The Archangel of Salvation, Uriel shows people how to heal and brings forgiveness t those who ask. Tradition teaches that Uriel stands before the gates of Heaven and denies entrance to all who have failed to love God. Uriel also offers unconditional forgiveness and holds the keys that unlock the gates. Uriel is mentioned often in apocryphal scripture and other early religious writings that did not make it into what we now know as The Bible. The archangel is credited with rescuing John the Baptist from the Massacre of the Innocents the king ordered upon hearing about the birth of Jesus. Jewish tradition holds that Uriel checked the doors for lambs blood during the Egyptian plagues. Uriel is also one of the select few angels who are allowed to enter the immediate presence of God. During medieval times, Uriel was considered the holy source of heat in the winter. In Catholic tradition, Uriel is the patron saint of the arts. He is also the patron saint of science, because of the archangels association with wisdom, and of those seeking the sacrament of Confirmation. The Coptic Christians venerate Uriel. To many other Christians, however, Uriel remains unknown. There is no mention of Uriel in canonical scripture. In 745 AD, Pope St Zachary condemned the churchs obsession with angels, saying that it bordered on angel worship which is forbidden by the Ten Commandments. He did, however, approve the reverence of certain named angels. Uriel was one of many angels that were left off of this list. Despite the efforts of Pope St. Zachary, many people still venerate Uriel, especially among Kabbalists and Eastern Orthodox Christians. Uriels Feast Day is July 28th as the archangels influence is deemed to peak in the middle of the summer. Uriel stands guard over the summer, guiding the ripening of the grain harvest and the blossoming of a multitude of flowers. Making A Connection With Uriel Connecting with Uriel is becoming increasingly common among people in the New Age movement and Christians exploring their own deeper spirituality. There is no one correct way to make a connection with the Archangel Uriel. What is important is that you find a method that is comfortable for you. Prayer is obviously the most common method for connecting with Uriel. However, the influence of New Age mysticism has caused a growth in the popularity of meditation as a means of venerating the archangels. Because archangels are ever-present spiritual beings, you can connect with them whenever and wherever you are. Archangels have a historic tendency to appear to humanity in dreams and visions. The act of praying allows us to communicate openly with God and His angels. Prayer is usually a one-way communication from us to the divine as we seek to have our voices heard. Occasionally, people will receive a directly communicated answer during their prayers. Most often, however, the answers to our prayer occur over time. All you need is your soul, and open heart, and humility. The words will come when you are ready. There are two basic forms of prayer formal and informal. Formal prayers are the prayers that are passed down through church tradition or newer prayers that follow the same form. They generally start by acknowledging who is being prayed to and honoring or venerating them, The person praying then humbles themselves and makes their prayer request. Informal prayers do not follow a traditional form. While their tone is more reverent than casual speaking, the words themselves are generally improvised on the spot or are words that are personally relevant to the one who is praying. Connecting With Archangel Uriel Through Traditional Formal Prayer Formal prayer helps us to speak with God and his angels when our own words fail us. When the crowd asked Jesus Christ how they should pray to God, he gave them The Lords Prayer. Clearly, any form of prayer will work if it is humble and honest. The use of traditional formal prayers makes the act easier. During stressful situations, we can struggle to find the right words to say. They are also available specifically for different saints and the archangels. The Chaplet of The Archangel Uriel consists of the Medal of Uriel, three beads representing the Holy Trinity, and nine beads that represent the nine choirs of angels. The chaplet can be used in the following manner. The medal Holding the medal between your finger and thumb, recite the Hail Archangel Uriel from above. Novenas A novena is a series of prayers said for nine days in a row. They can be the same prayer, or a different one each day. The nine days of prayer remind us of the nine days the apostles spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost. The days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday are the most popular time for saying novenas, but they can be used at any time. Saying a novena to Uriel is often done around the archangels Feast Day of July 25th or the Feast Day shared with the other archangels, September 29th. Novenas can be said with prayers from prayer books, with chaplets, or y praying the rosary. They can also be used in conjunction with meditative rituals. The Archangel is traditionally associated with the number 9, making novenas a particularly appropriate way to seek your connection with him. Connecting Through Meditation Meditating is different from praying and is an important addition to your spiritual growth. During prayer you are seeking an audience with the divine. You want to be heard, whether you are offering praise, asking forgiveness, or seeking guidance. Prayer is essentially an act of active communication with God and His angels. During meditation, you are seeking to listen more than to hear. There is a place for communicating while meditation, but the act is more importantly an opportunity to be still in body and mind so that you can receive messages from heaven. Through meditation, you enter a trance-like state where you are better able to listen to communication from the angels of the Lord. Mediation can be accomplished anywhere. Using a meditative ritual can be a wonderfully holy and cathartic experience. The process of the meditative ritual brings the body, mind, and soul in to a restful and peaceful state. This opens your awareness to the presence of the divine. To begin meditating, you first need to find a quiet and secluded place. The church is an excellent place for meditative purposes. Most churches are open between services, allowing people to enter and meditate on the word of God. In Catholic churches, the inner room where the Eucharist is displayed is the quietest area is perfect for reaching a meditative state. Meditating in the presence of the Body of Christ is a deeply religious experience. Secluded gardens that are off the beaten path are also wonderful places for meditation. If you do not have access to a place like this, however, you can easily create a meditative space within your own home by setting up a shrine using little more than a table, table cloth, candles, and incense. Once you have found a proper place to meditate, make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Make yourself become aware of every breath you take, breathing in and out slowly and deeply. As you inhale, feel yourself breathing in the spirit of the Archangel Uriel. As you exhale, allow yourself to release you anxiety and fear. By releasing your anxiety, you make room in your mind and soul for the wisdom which Uriel wants to bestow on you. Meditating is also an excellent way to start your day with energy and focus, or to end your day in a peaceful and reflective state. Visualization during meditation keeps you focused on your objective and helps you to avoid becoming distracted. This is where icons, statues, and images of the Archangel Uriel can be used effectively. These items do nothing of themselves other than to help you remain focused. Do not mistake the images fr the actual presence of the Archangel Uriel, as that would amount to idol worship. Merely let the images help you to create a vision in your own mind that the archangel can fill with his own presence. As you go deeper into your meditation with Uriel, you will see a ray of light. The light will either be white, yellow, or gold, as these are the colors associated with Uriel. Uriel is known as The Fire Of God, so do not be surprised if you see flames in your vision. The visions of fire or light will join with your actual vision of the Archangel Uriel. This way, you will understand with whom you are present. While meditating, you must remain passive. Do not try to manipulate or actively understand the messages you are receiving. This can lead to your ego altering the messages in a way that is easier for you to handle. But, this will result in you losing the message from the archangel. You ego is a powerful tool of Satan. To meditate on the message of the archangel, you need to subjugate you ego completely so that you can fully receive the Uriels message. There will be ample time to make sense of that message once the meditation is complete. Connecting With Uriel Through Simply Speaking Informal conversations with God are becoming common place. Humanity is developing in its collective relationship with God. Where once we could only speak with the Lord in a formal manner, we have learned to converse with God and His angels whenever we feel the need and in whichever way is most expedient and effective. Developing a habit of casually speaking with the divine is more convenient than making time for formal or ritualized prayer, and makes it easier to stay connected with the divine throughout the day. Formal and informal prayers serve the purpose of teaching us how to pray. From these prayers, we learn to offer praise, remain humble, seek forgiveness of our sins, and accept the will of God. Of these things, remaining humble is vital. To receive the blessing of the Archangel Uriel, we must acknowledge that we are not deserving and ask for these blessings along with his mercy. Pride is another tool of Satan. Thus, we must eliminate our pride to ensure out connection with the archangel. Simply speaking to Archangel Uriel is particularly appropriate during emergencies. When we are suffering, God doesnt expect us to just stop what we are doing, grab our rosary, and find a church. He wants to hear from us immediately, just as Christ called out to Him on the cross. Jesus Christ showed us that we can speak to God just as effectively whether we are in a peaceful garden or under extreme physical and spiritual anguish. Having a chaplet, medal, or charm handy can give you something to hold on to and focus on, and also serves to help you to relax. However, they do nothing more than that. You will start the process yourself through prayer and meditation so that you can become aware of the presence of Uriel. Nest, write down you question or request for the archangel on a piece of paper. Now, stay ready to write and listen for the archangels response. When your God appointed time has come, Uriel will be there to protect you and to welcome you at the Aptitude Influences: Second Language Acquisition Aptitude Influences: Second Language Acquisition Second language learning aptitude is featured as strengths which individual learners have in the cognitive abilities information processing during L2 learning and accomplishment in various stages and within different contexts. Aptitude has conventionally been observed as a key factor in the domain of L2 learning in which Ehrman and Oxford (1995) propose that its measures are most strongly correlated with L2 proficiency among all the individual differences (ID) variables. Therefore, emphasizing on the way it is measured, its role in the second language acquisition (SLA) process, and most importantly, the extent to which its factors may affect L2, aptitude can be confirmed as a strong predictor of academic success in SLA. In this paper, after discussing the nature of aptitude in general, a few important aptitude factors which contribute to SLA will be focused. DEFINITION OF LANGUAGE APTITUDE In an early review paper on aptitude research, Carroll (1981) defines general aptitude as an ability of learning a task, which involves a special inclination towards learning L2 and depends on some combination of persistent characteristics of the learner. In Carrolls specific view, aptitude is separated from achievement and motivation. Also, aptitude must be seen as a stable factor, perhaps even innate. Notably, it is not a prerequisite for L2 acquisition and should be distinct from general intelligence. CARROLLS INITIAL WORK It is appropriate to start the discussion of aptitude with a review of the work of the American psychologist J. B. Carroll who dominated the area by researched foreign language aptitude and established the parameters within which the sub-field still operates. It is important to report that till date, there has been large-scale work in making use of the Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) produced by Carroll and Sapon (1959). Carrolls four factors of aptitude Carroll (1965, 1991) reports that aptitude contains four sub-components, namely, phonemic coding ability, grammatical sensitivity, inductive language analytic ability, and memory. At the time of the MLAT production, its interpretation reflected the focus on psychology, described it as relatively simple stimulus-response connections, without mentioning more complex memory organization or representation. Skehan, (1980) has expanded in the recent aptitude research to the conceptualization of memory significantly, to seeing memory as only one part of aptitude but not the most important aspect. Instead, the ability to memorize more auditorily complex material are now viewed as more powerful predictors of L2 learning. Grammatical sensitivity The ability to understand the contribution that words make in sentences is the main focus in this area. The passive aspect to this ability is to emphasize recognition of function other than explicit representation (Skehan, 1998). Inductive language analytic ability This involves the ability to analyze a corpus of language material and then pay attention and discover patterns of correspondence and relationships including meaning and syntactic form. No matter it involves implicit or explicit rule representation, this fundamental attribute represents an ability to identify pattern, especially in verbal material. POST CARROL RESEARCH Since Carrolls influential work, the story of aptitude has not changed very much. However, it is useful to briefly review the studies which have appeared. Working during the 1960s, Pimsleur (1966) produces the only alternative battery, the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery (PLAB), targeted at high school students. This set of sub-tests is broadly similar to Carrolls MLAT, but places greater emphasis on auditory factors, and less on memory. Since then, there has been marginalizing influence related to the putative link between aptitude and learning context. Many researchers believe that foreign language aptitude with the methodologies that prevailed at the time of Carrolls research no longer survives in SLA field. In particular, Krashen (1981) links foreign language aptitude to learning, in which it involves teacher-led activities and occurs in classrooms. In other words, aptitude is explicit rule-focus, non-communicative practice, and learners awareness of language items. As a matter of fact, however, Reves (1983) points out the existing evidence between aptitude scores and naturalistic learning as well as de Graaff (1997a, 1997b) and Robinson (1995) mention the connections between aptitude scores and acquisitional measures that move towards the center of aptitude related to L2 acquisition processes. These instructional sets contain the symbols: +/- awareness of targets, +/- intention to learn targets, and +/- explicit metalinguistic information in relation to the form of targets. It is discovered that that L2 learning in explicit conditions, with certain level of metalinguistic awareness and instruction, were as effective and efficient as learning in implicit conditions under the condition that the stimulus domain was complex rather than having a simple L2 stimulus domain (Robinson, 1996a and de Graaff, 1997b). In addition, as measured by subtests of traditional tests like Carrolls MLAT, Robinson (1997a) and Williams (1999) claim that ID in aptitude and memory ability affect learning in both implicit and explicit conditions. Hence, it is suggested that adult L2 learning under all conditions of exposure is basically more or less the same (Robinson, 1996b, 2001) since the ID in the conscious information processing abilities are the underlying differences in the extent of learning which can be observed through the measurement of aptitude and memory tests. There are findings proving that L2 learning is facilitated when strengths in patterns of abilities or aptitudes are compatible with the processing demands of certain instructional sets. On the contrary, Krashens (1982) supports that implicit learning is basically different from explicit learning as the former focuses on unconscious processes and is insensitive to ID in the abilities in the traditional aptitude tests measurement such as MLAT which forms contrast to the concept of the latter. Output The output study is important in SLA in which the emphasis of most research activity has been on competence-oriented analyses of structural change. Therefore, output can be observed either as the immediate and extensive results of structural change, or the consequence of automatisation process. New analysis of output has recently formed a more central role. It is argued that the use of communication strategies can be influential to language development. Although it is at the expense of pressure for structural change, such strategies enable the effective communication of meanings. The necessity to communicate may induce more difficulties in basic form changes in some L2 learners (Schmidt, 1983; Skehan, 1992, 1998). Moreover, the nature of fluency should be understood or viewed as an interesting problem in SLA learners. Bygate (1988) clarifies that learners make noticeable dependence on time-creating devices to ease off real-time processing pressure. At the same time, Foster (2001) points out that learners lexically depend on chunks of language which function as wholes and therefore ease off processing demands as they can be retrieved without internal analysis. Since language in this view depends on lexicalized chunks, a different analysis on the role of memory in language processing is required. Instead of using a conservative slot-and-filler approach which involves syntactic rules and lexical elements, language as memory reliant can be used with the need of a capacious, redundantly-stored memory system. This is the only way to ensure speakers to have the pressures of real-time processing. Attention and Focus on Form (FonF) Techniques Many earlier research studies conducted classroom research under the influence of different kinds of intervention aiming to direct learner attention to L2 form through activities, which have a primary focus on meaning and the accomplishment of communicative goals (Doughty, 2004; Doughty Williams, 1998). Two recent studies show this may be due to recasting. Mackey, Philp, Egi, Fujii, and Tatsumi (2002), in collaboration with various levels of students who join foreign language EFL program, discover obvious positive relationships between phonological working memory capacity measurement and recasts of noticing of information in communicative L2 interaction within three consecutive days. Yet, lower educational levels learners indicate this relationship more significantly than that of higher educational levels learners. Likewise, Robinson (1999) and Robinson Yamaguchi (1999) report obvious positive correlations between phonetic sensitivity measurement and rote memory, in which learning from recasts by university level and non-language majors over a five week of task-based interaction. Pre- and post-test scores on relative clause production are used to measure learning as a whole, with the targeted form in the research. Age Cooper (2002) shows evidence that intelligence measures in middle childhood can be used to predict intelligence in later life. The other side of the coin, yet, is that age is a central factor to an individuals language learning capacity as proved by a huge body of literature on the critical period hypothesis mentioning age-related changes in SLA. Therefore, it is practical to assume that aptitude changes occurred over time is in relation to some age-related variation. Researcher proves that foreign language aptitude shown to be relatively fixed over long period of ones life span (Carroll, 1981). Bristol-linked research of Skehan also claims aptitude is stable because of the obvious correlations between related measures taken more than 10 years apart. Therefore, Skehan (1989) comments that abilities during some language learning arise by the age of three and a half. DISCUSSION Foreign language aptitude studies and the related research decline notably from the 1970s with the following suggested reasons behind (Skehan, 2002). Firstly, aptitude is considered as anti-egalitarian in which testing aptitude of someone and assigning them a score really contain a forbidding quality. According to the assumption of the possible fixed talent and shaped level of achievement, language learning capacity would be measured in a rigid manner and may hence lead to the consequent that aptitude which is originally taken to be the value of individual effort is vanished. In addition, Krashen (1981), who insists that aptitude is only for the purpose of learning rather than acquisition, comments that the marginality of learning is a very destructive assessment of the role of aptitude. Thirdly, it is an obvious that English Language teachers are not interested in the individual differences that exist among learners (Skehan, 2002). This may due to the fact that there is a huge growth of importance in the material of language teaching and learning. The forward movement of such materials means textbooks should be published in a way that can suit the largest markets for the teachers and learners. Those textbook series are sold in a large number which reflects the growing importance of English as a global language, with more international and general in nature. In other words, it is not an attractive commercial option for having the ideas of catering for individual learning preferences, styles, or aptitudes. It is worth to discuss those factors widely across the timeline because they dominate the area of research in foreign language aptitude and involve lots of pedagogical activities in classrooms. However, for many years, aptitude has been isolated from the wider contexts of foreign language learning and acquisition as discussed. Perhaps, aptitude may well be a central theory if there is a focus on form in SLA. Also, under the condition that critical period for second language learning is accepted generally, and the real acquisition is undertaking, aptitude may then well represent ID which is responsible for the effectiveness of language learning.
