What is the Definition of True Love Essay - 1328 Words

I wanna love you and treat you right; I wanna love you every day and every night: Well be together with a roof right over our heads; Well share the shelter of my single bed; Well share the same room, yeah! - for Jah provide the bread. Is this love - is this love - is this love - Is this love that Im feelin?--- Bob Marley. Bob Marley wrote and sang about love just like hundreds of people before him. His idea of true love was sharing with someone in order to meet the basic needs and spiritual way of life. The security of a relationship is one important part of a complex number of needs that have to be met for truelove to exist. The Merrian Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, defines â€Å"truelove† as†¦show more content†¦Harvey says a woman’s love â€Å"Stands the test of time, logic, and all circumstance†(20). However, when it comes to a man’s love Harvey says â€Å"I’m here to tell you that expe cting that kind of love- that perfection- from a man is unrealistic. That’s right, I said it- it’s not gonna happen, no way, no how. Because a man’s love isn’t like a woman’s love†(21). Harvey is not saying a man cannot love, but that men love differently than women. When a man truly loves a woman, according to Harvey, the man will do three things. First, he will profess his love by introducing her as his woman, by giving her a title like, â€Å"my girl† or â€Å"my baby’s momma† or â€Å"my wife†(21). Not just calling her his friend. Second, a man will provide by working for his woman to help buy food, and pay the household bills. Third, a man protects his woman and if someone does, says, or thinks about disrespecting his woman, that person will risk â€Å"being obliterated†(30). The views of women and men may differ about how love is expressed. From Harvey’s description, women are seen as nurturers and men as providers. When I think of love, it is hard to narrow this complex subject into a quick and simple answer because of the many different kinds of love. When I think about my first thoughts of love it would have to be my upbringing in the Christian Church. God’s love or how God says we should love.
